Americans Try Making Toad in the Hole
After attempting to cook a Sunday dinner with Yorkshire pudding, we received a lot of suggestions to try toad in the hole. We tried a toad in the hole ready meal from M&S on a previous trip to the UK (and were told we did it all wrong because we forgot the gravy). Today we try making toad in the hole with mash potatoes, peas, and onion gravy. British bangers were the hardest part of the puzzle in our attempt to make this dish while in the US, but Jolly Foods came through with some delightful bangers and this was the first meal since our last trip to the UK where we truly felt like we were eating authentic British food.
Have a suggestion for another dish we should attempt to make? Leave a comment and let us know!

As American travelers, we were surprised by many aspects of the UK during our first visit. In this video, we discuss 10 things that took us by surprise, like not needing a car, narrow roads, public footpaths, and the efficiency of contactless payments and queuing. But the biggest shock? It's something that I can't believe we are so bad at in the US. While many of the surprises were positive, ev...

Why would you even drive for 48 hours when you can take a plane and fly there? No one in Europe drives from Stockholm to Paris, we just fly. Or some environmentally conscious people could also take a night train which is considerably faster than driving a car.

If you are entertaining, make two batches of gravy, but leave one hidden in the kitchen. Gravy this good won’t last long enough and when the host has finished serving there won’t be any left. Until the hidden jug magically appears.

BBC's 'Detectorists' is a joy. There are 3 seasons plus a couple of holiday specials. It's two pals in Essex (South East England) whose hobby is metal detecting for historic artefacts (a perfectly normal hobby over here!). Slow-burn comedy as our relatable nerds tackle life, relationships and landowners' permissions. Stunning scenery (it's actually filmed in Suffolk) that'll make you book your next return visit 🇬🇧

Have a suggestion! Mustard is not always used up in my family in uk! Mix your mayo and mustard together on a ham sandwhich, delicious. Or even cheese on toast yummy. Maris piper is my familys favourite, the cheapest version in uk is called white potatoes, which most young families use, idid myself years ago. Now i can afford to use brands. Albert bartlett is another great all rounder, mash, boiled or roast.as for the perfect puds, your oil should absolutely sizzle when adding your Yorkshire mix. 🇬🇧 here your 1st time looks amazing.

You did really well, one suggestion, make the batter in the morning and refridgate until you are ready to cook. The cold batter hitting the hot oil really helps the rise.

This is a regional dish from Northern England (where I am from) so have plenty of experience and I am rating your attempt at 10 out of 10 - being understanding that this it your first attempt. You could have cut the butter smaller (for the mash) and the onion thinner (for the gravy) but you learned that from doing it and you mentioned it in the video. Your sausage choice was great (you need thick sausage otherwise they end up too dry) and your pudding batter looks great. Your dish is way better than my first attempt - even though it is a cultural dish for me and I have easy access to the best ingredients. Well done, and thanks for sharing ❤

And your gravy texture was perfect for my opinion - it is okay to be a little thin - it works good with the mash and the batter.

An intriguing list. Pace of life and "competition" can see us become less thoughtful about our fellows and here in the UK we find our lifestyles are probably less frenetic, with social habits that teach "think about others" can still be handed on.

If like to suggest Rice Pudding. Proper well made rice pudding shouldnt be heavy and stodgy + if you follow my late Mums method itll be perfeect every time. I cant give quantities as i just know. Boil the pudding rice (not risotto rice) until its absorbed all the water. Meanwhile in a basin youve cracked two eggs then whisked in two tablespoonfuls of sugar,a teaspoon of flour + a pinch of cornflower if you have it. Meanwhile youve heated up a saucepan of milk but not to boiling point. Pour it on to the egg mixture and whisk it in then stir in the cooked rice. Bake the mixture in the oven about 20 minutes. You can put currants in,or jam and Mum always sprinkled some ground nutmeg on. It sounds more complicated and time consuming than it is. You can eat this pudding winter or summer. PS. I cant do gravy. You are going to be the best fed americans in usa.

A most enjoyable potpourri of places to see in England, even if Devon (rhymes with Heaven!) doesn't get a mention. I was born there but spent a happy later youth in and around Bath where I went to school and my stepfather worked at that time. Happy 1950s memories!

WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE was fermented by a chemist who left it in his basement and forgot about it. Rather than throw barrels of the stuff away he tasted it then he bottled is as a condiment. Its Tamarind, Vinegar, Sugar Salt and Onions and Garlic and Anchovies. Waste Not Want Not was his philosophy!
